This Week In Food: I had the chance to scratch off my To-Do list a couple of places (the Sushi Deli at Japanese Market and Red Light Little River), both of which offered options for this week’s list.
On Thursday I had lunch at my favorite place right now, Blue Collar. I almost always have the Juicy Burger since it’s one of the best I’ve ever tried, but this time the Braised Pork Cheeks seems too good to pass. I wasn’t wrong. The sauce, the quality of the mash, the sweetness and tenderness of the cheeks were amazing. Daniel Serfer is one hell of a good cook, no doubt one of the best in town right now.
Friday night I was tempted by a Tweet from @yalltastethis and we went over as quick as we could to Nemesis Urban Bistro. Micah is another one of our favorites and sitting on the bar watching her work is an absolute delight. We tried a few of our favorites (tuscan sushi!) but the best thing I ate and a first for me were the Alligator Ribs in a Garam Masala rub. I’m lucky they were the special of the night and I got the last set! Gator ribs have the flavor of chicken and the texture of white firm fish. Delicious.
On Saturday I finally made it to the much mentioned Sushi Deli at the Japanese Market. Unfortunately we got there late and the chef was all out of specials (toro, aji), but when we ordered the sweet shrimp nigiri, which we loved, we had no idea the surprise we were in for. The shrimp heads, deep fried in a light tempura batter. I had never eaten a shrimp head before, and thought perhaps they were brought to us for decor. One bite and we were blown away. We ordered 3 extra! Kudos to The Kristy Q and Carlos Acosta for lending me their pics, since I could not take any, as per the policy of the place.
We also managed to squeeze in a much anticipated place we hadn’t tried yet, Red Light Little River. The BBQ shrimp were unbelievably rich and spicy at the same time, with a sauce that required tons of bread to finish it. So good.
Finally on Sunday, and after a long but well worth it wait, we were able to taste the Eating House brunch. All items were really good but the stand out was this BBQ chicken sandwich which was juicy, soft and spicy all at the same time. He should sell them by the dozen.
That’s it for this week, see you all next week.
